Suggested Prayers and Saint Info:

Saint John Damascene was a monk, priest, and Doctor of the Church. He is often referred to as the Doctor of the Assumption because of his writings and teachings on Mary’s Assumption, body and soul, into heaven. He is a Father of both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.

St. Nicholas, one of the most popular minor saints, is now traditionally associated with the festival of Christmas. In many countries children receive gifts on December 6, St. Nicholas Day. He is one of the patron saints of children and of sailors.

St. Nicholas of Myra (c. 270–343 A.D.) was a 4th-century bishop known for his holiness, generosity, and defense of the faith. Born in Patara (modern-day Turkey) to wealthy Christian parents, Nicholas inherited their fortune after their early deaths and dedicated his life to serving God and others.

He freely gave his inheritance to those in need, often in secret, embodying the biblical teaching that giving should be done without seeking recognition (Matthew 6:3-4). Nicholas was ordained as a priest and later became the Bishop of Myra. As a bishop, he was known for his pastoral care and defense of the church.

O good Saint Nicholas, patron of children, sailors and the helpless, watch over those who pray to Jesus, your Lord and theirs, as well as over those who humble themselves before you. Bring us all in reverence to the Holy Child of Bethlehem, when true joy and peace are found. Amen.

The feast day of St. Juan Diego is celebrated on December 9. Juan was born in a ward of Tlayacac in Cuauhtitlan. His birth name was Cuauhtlatzin, which means “The talking eagle”. He was a farmer and a weaver. He is the first indigenous American Saint.

St Juan Diego is associated with the apparitions of the Virgin Mary, in her manifestation as Our Lady of Guadalupe, in December 1531 on Tepeyac Hill on the outskirts of what is now Mexico City.

Our Lady of Loreto

O God, who, fulfilling the promise
made to our Fathers,
chose the Blessed Virgin Mary
to become the Mother of the Savior,
grant that we may follow her example,
for her humility was pleasing to You
and her obedience profitable to us.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in unity
of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

We are grateful for the unfathomable gift of the ability to be in relationship with Jesus Christ, King of the Universe who became one of us in order to save us.

Forgiveness

We are sorry for the times we take you for granted Lord and do not pay attention to deepening our relationship with you through holy conversation in prayer. Help us to pray each day 'as if prayer was the air we breathe' so that our souls will live.

We are sorry for the times when we feel justified or righteous in zeal, even zeal for God, that leads to unintended consequences, violence or affliction. Help us to discern wisely and know that Jesus wants peace and weeps in the face of affliction. (adapted from reflection by Brian Schmisek, provost University of St Mary's of the Lake, Mundelein)

Suggested Prayers and Resources:

On November 21, we celebrate the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple by her parents Anna and Joachim. While it is not mentioned in Scripture, there is early evidence that this event was celebrated in both the Eastern and Western Churches.

Holy Mary, succor the wretched, help the fainthearted, comfort the sorrowful, pray for the people, shield the clergy, intercede for holy women; let all who celebrate thy holy commemoration feel thy protection. Be thou at hand, ready to aid our prayers, and obtain for us what we desire.

Prayer to St. Cecilia

O glorious St. Cecilia,
virgin and martyr,
you won the martyr’s crown
without renouncing
your love for Jesus,
the delight of your soul.

We ask that you help us
to be faithful in our love for Jesus,
that, in the communion of the saints,
we may praise Him twice in our song
of rejoicing for the Blood
that He shed which gave us
the grace to accomplish
His will on earth.

Amen.

The solemnity of Christ the King is the pinnacle and fulfillment of the entire liturgical calendar—the enthronement of Our Lord Jesus Christ as King of the Universe.

Saint Andrew Dung-Lac was one of the 117 people martyred in Vietnam between 1820 and 1862. While members of this group were beatified on four different occasions between 1900 and 1951, all were canonized by Pope John Paul II.

Suggested Prayers and Resources:

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was an Italian-American nun who dedicated her life to serving Italian immigrants in the United States. As the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, she established numerous schools, orphanages, and hospitals, becoming the patron saint of immigrants. Canonized in 1946, she remains an enduring symbol of faith, charity, and dedication to service.

"Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, you dedicated your life to serving the poor and spreading God's love. Intercede for us that we may follow your example of faith, courage, and charity. Guide us in our own work of love and service to others. Help us to trust in God's will and to always act with compassion. Amen."

He was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1931 by Pope Pius XI. His writings are remarkable for their exact scientific knowledge, and for that reason he has been made the patron saint of scientists.

Though Father Albert was one of the most prolific and profound writers in the Church, God also used him to help form a man who became the Church’s greatest theologian: Saint Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary was a princess of Hungary whose devotion to the poor (for whom she relinquished her wealth) made her an enduring symbol of Christian charity. Following her husband’s death, she joined the Third Order of St. Francis and lived a life of service and austerity.

Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, Virgin

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was a French missionary and educator known for her dedication to the education of Indigenous Americans and her founding of the Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States.

Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles

This feast combines the standard celebration of the dedication of a church for St. Peter's Basilica and the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, which were both built by the Emperor Constantine the Great during the 4th century. These sites had already been visited by pilgrims for over a century when the basilicas were built to honor the apostles traditionally believed to have been buried there.  The basilicas were originally joined by a colonnade, which was built despite the distance of several miles between them.

Basilica of St. John Lateran, the highest-ranking and oldest among the great papal basilicas of Rome as well as the oldest public church in Rome, having been consecrated in 324 CE by Pope Sylvester I. Though it is outside Vatican City proper, it nonetheless belongs to the Holy See.

Pope St Leo the Great was an Italian aristocrat and was the first pope to have been called "the Great". He is perhaps best known for having met Attila the Hun in 452 and persuading him to turn back from his invasion of Italy.

St. Martin, humble servant of God, You gave your cloak to a poor man in need, Teach us to live with compassion and generosity. Help us to serve others with love and humility, And to follow the example of your kindness and charity. Intercede for us before the Lord, that we may be granted the grace to live as you did, Faithful and devoted to God’s will. Amen.

His death accomplished what he desired, martyrdom and the unification of the Eastern Orthodox with Rome. Later his body was brought to Rome. He was Canonized by Pope Pius IX Then Pope John XXIII had his body placed under the altar of St. Basil in St. Peter's Basilica. St. Josaphat pray for us. Pray for all priests to be holy.

Pope Leo XIV has asked us to pray the Holy Rosary daily, particularly in this month of October.

All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows' Day or Hallowmas, is a Christian solemnity dedicated to honoring all saints who have attained heaven. It is celebrated on November 1 in Western Christianity, while the Eastern Orthodox Church observes it on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The day serves as a reminder of the spiritual bond between the living and the saints, emphasizing the belief in the "Church triumphant"
(those in heaven) and the "Church militant" (the living believers).

St. Martín de Porres (born 1579, Lima, Peru—died November 3, 1639), a Peruvian Roman Catholic friar noted for his kindness, his nursing of the sick, his obedience, and his charity.

"Let everything you do be done in love" - said St. Charles Borromeo. Without a shadow of a doubt, it can be said that this sentence expresses the entire Gospel of Christ. At the same time, it is the motto of the life and activity of St. Charles Borromeo, whom the Church remembers liturgically on November 4.

Teresa of Ávila (Teresa of Jesus)

Jesus said to St Teresa, “I gave you My Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the Blessed Virgin. What can you give Me?”

Guided by You

Lord, grant that I may always allow myself to be guided by You,
always follow Your plans,
and perfectly accomplish Your Holy Will.
Grant that in all things, great and small,
today and all the days of my life,
I may do whatever You require of me.
Help me respond to the slightest prompting of Your Grace,
so that I may be Your trustworthy instrument for Your honour.

Noble Saint Vincent de Paul,
beloved servant of the poor,
may we follow your example and do good works
among those whom society has abandoned,
enslaved, or forgotten.
Inspire us to feed the hungry,
to love a child,
to provide comfort and medicine to the sick,
to clothe those whose garments are threadbare,
and to offer hope and our Lord’s words
to all who need respite.
Pray for us to our beloved God
that we may commit ourselves selflessly
to doing the same charitable acts
that you did all your life,
and intercede with him
that we may have the favour of his guidance
and strength and love upon this important and meaningful work. Amen.

I call upon Archangel Michael and his legions of angels to clear all negative influences from any source, within and around my loved ones, their family, and home. Cleanse them from negative influences and give them the courage and strength for their next life phase. Guide them along their highest path of the greatest good. Thank you, Amen.

I call upon Archangel Raphael and the legions of healing angels to heal my loved ones on all levels – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually – throughout all time frames and dimensions. Please return their body, soul, and spirit to wholeness and balance. Thank You, Amen

I call upon Archangel Gabriel and the legions of messenger angels to bring to my loved ones messages, guidance, hope, and inspiration that are perfect for them right now so that they will have all the loving guidance they need right now. Thank You, Amen

He is most famous for the miraculous liquefaction of his blood, which occurs annually in Naples, Italy. His steadfast faith in the face of persecution and his miracles have made him one of the most venerated saints in Italy.

Prayer

In the land of Korea your call to Catholic faith formed a people of adoption, whose growth you nurtured by the blood of Andrew, Paul, and their companions. Saint John Chrysostom was a convert, a holy deacon, an influential priest, an exceptionally consequential archbishop, and a prolific writer. This latter quality ultimately earned him the distinction of being a Doctor of the Church.

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, also known as the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, commemorates three events: the discovery of the True Cross in 326, its exaltation for public veneration in 335, and the recovery of the Cross from the Persians in 628.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary are key moments of grief and suffering in the life of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, as prophesied by Simeon and depicted in the Gospels. These seven sorrows include Simeon's prophecy of Jesus's future suffering, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple, Mary meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, her presence at the Crucifixion, the moment Jesus is taken down from the cross, and the burial of Jesus.

St. Cornelius, Pope, Martyr and St. Cyprian, Bishop, Martyr

Gracious God, Saints Cornelius and Cyprian dealt with terrible persecutions. Saint Cornelius was Pope and he anguished over the sufferings of his people.  Saint Cyprian was his friend and said, “Let us relieve burdens and afflictions by mutual love.”  He ministered to the Pope by pointing out that not a single Christian had given up the Faith.  I ask these saints to pray for the relationships in my life, that we will give caring support to each other as we pass through trials.  O Lord, help us to remember that You have given friends to us as gifts, because You don’t want us to carry our crosses alone.  Thank you for these treasures!  Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, pray for us.  Amen.

Offerings of prayer and resources

Thank you all for your faithfulness to prayer. Praise God for keeping you fervent as warriors! The power of prayer is so evident in the lives of St Monica and Saint Augustine!

Saint Augustine is remembered in a prayer that begins, "Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in You". A common image of him shows him as a bishop with a burning heart as a symbol of his fervent love for God and often with books to represent his profound writings, such as Confessions and The City of God. He is a patron of theologians, printers, brewers, and others, and his feast day is August 28.

Saint John the Baptist, you were given a holy mission and sanctified in your mother's womb in preparation for that mission. You always pointed the way to Christ, the Savior of all. Please pray that I will have the same courage and the resolve to fulfill my duties, no matter the cost.

St. Gregory the Great, a 6th-century pope and Doctor of the Church, was a visionary leader who reformed the Church, revitalized missionary efforts, and developed Gregorian Chant.

May all the angels and Saint Rita, St Philip, and St Augustine, part of the Church Triumphant, pray for us and lead us closer to Jesus as we continue to celebrate his Resurrection, our redemption and God's Divine Mercy.

We lift up prayers for the newly elected Pope Leo XIV and his intentions along with those Pope Francis had intended for us to pray this May: For working conditions

Let us pray that through work, each person might find fulfillment, families might be sustained in dignity, and society might be humanized.

Thanksgiving

We are united in gratitude for favors received and answered prayers of intentions for which we have prayed. Thank you dear God, for always hearing and answering our prayers according to your Divine Will and in your perfect timing.

We are thankful for all of the celebrations and milestones being recognized with joy among the families of Ascension parish, including graduations and sacraments.

We are grateful for all of the ways we show our love to God and others, to be able to shine our lights into the world.

We thank God for the gift of Mama Mary and the ways she nurtures and cares for us and all of humanity.

Forgiveness

We are sorry for the times when our lack of understanding or compassion may increase discord in our families or communities.

We ask forgiveness for not reaching out for reconciliation and being the first to forgive another.

We are sorry for the times we share gossip or allow negative or untrue comments about others to be shared.

Special Intentions

We join in prayers for the St Vincent de Paul team on rotation this week, may they be guided by the Holy Spirit and the love of neighbor in their visits to people in need.

We pray for peace. We lift up a fervent prayer that all may hear and follow the guidance of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to lead us toward peace in our world, peace in our families and peace in our hearts.

We join in prayer for those with earthly power, that they may be servant leaders, following the Holy Spirit's guidance in wisdom, mercy, and justice.

In this Jubilee year of Hope, we pray for increased hope and trust in the Father's love for us and His power to work all things for the good, even when we don't understand, in our pain or sorrow.

We pray for the special intentions held in the hearts of each of our parishioners and friends.

Healing

We pray, through the intercession of St Peregrine, Saint Leopold Maria Mandich and St Agatha, for those with cancer diagnoses, undergoing testing and in treatment, throughout their challenges and while living their recovery.

We continue to lift up all those that have been on our cancer list and are continuing their journey to healing.

This week we lift up Debbie, whose cancer has metastasized and Madeline undergoing radiation treatments this week.

May all patients and their families have a spirit of fortitude, trust, peace, hope and, if it be the Lord's will, bestow miraculous healings! Above all, may they know that they are never alone in their struggles.

Through the intercession of St Dymphna, St John of God and St Benedict Joseph Labre, we lift up those in with mental and emotional health issues, including anxiety and depression, and seeking to be free from addictions. We also lift up their psychiatrists and professionals who work with them.

We lift up Pat Quatrocchi and all who have recently had, or will soon have, surgeries, including Alice who is having brain surgery today and Richard who went through liver and kidney transplants, that they may have successful health outcomes and come to full healing and restoration without side effects or pain.

We continue to lift up all those for whom have prayed for in the past, including little Sophie and Zachary, for all of their needs and those of their families, and for Christ's peace.

We share in special prayers for all in hospice and their families. May Steve, Tammy, Veronica, Bill Johnson, John Cooper, and Lee Pettingill have comfort, peace and loving care to surround them during this sacred time of transition. May St Joseph, patron of departing souls, be close to them.

Eternal Peace

We pray for the souls of those who will soon die and those who have passed to the Lord, especially

Ronnie Bryden whose funeral was Saturday

and all the holy souls in Purgatory

May they be united with Christ in Heaven, and may their loved ones have peace and consolation

We are grateful for Jesus, our Good Shepherd, and for the continuity of leadership in our church through the Holy Spirit's inspiration as the Cardinals elected Pope Leo XIV as our new Holy Father. May he be supported by our prayers and lead many to holiness.

Suggested Prayers and Suggestions:

O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all the faithful, look favorably on your servant Leo XIV, whom you have set at the head of your church as her shepherd; grant, we pray, that by word and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care, he may come to everlasting life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
